What is a uPVC tilt and turn window?

A uPVC tilt and turn window is the continental alternative to a casement: it opens inward, tilting at the top to ventilate or turning fully in. In Britain it suits upper floors and large panes best.

01

Tilt position

The sash top leans in a few degrees, letting air in and keeping rain out, even overnight.

02

Full turn

The sash swings fully into the room on its side hinge, so upstairs you clean the outer pane from inside.

03

Large single sashes

Perimeter hardware carries the weight at several points, unlike casement stays, so one large pane can replace a split frame.

03Asked before every survey

The questions that matter.

Will an inward-opening uPVC window leak in a British storm?
Not with a well-made system, properly fitted. Multi-chamber profiles add a third seal at the sash centre, and perimeter locking pulls it tight into the frame. Drainage channels and the cill detail matter as much as the seals; both are part of our installation.
Can I really clean the outside glass from inside?
Yes. Turn the handle to the second position and the whole sash swings into the room, putting the outer pane within arm's reach. On a first floor or above, that is usually the argument that decides the system.
Will a deep sill or a blind get in the way of an inward-opening window?
Only when turned. A turned sash moves into the room, so plants on a deep sill or a blind too close will foul it; tilted, it moves only a few degrees. Tell us about blinds and furniture at survey and we plan around them.
Is a tilt and turn window secure?
Yes, the hardware locks the sash into the frame at several points around the perimeter, which resists forcing better than a single catch. The exact lock specification goes on your quote.
