Inward-opening aluminium tilt and turn windows on the Cortizo COR 70 Hidden Sash system, supplied and fitted across London.

01Aluminium windows

What is a tilt and turn window?

An aluminium tilt and turn window opens inward from one handle, tilting at the top to ventilate or turning fully into the room. Ours, the Cortizo COR 70 Hidden Sash, shows just 66 mm of frame.

01

Tilt, then turn

One handle tilts the top inward for secure, draught-free ventilation or turns the sash in to clean the outside glass.

02

Tall openings

Sashes reach 2,400 mm tall as standard and 3,500 mm on heavy-duty hardware, at up to 160 kg.

03

Hidden sash

The opening sash hides behind the frame, lining up with fixed panes; concealed handle and hinges are available.

04

Upper floors

For upper floors without ladder access: every pane cleans from inside, and the bottom hinge steadies the sash in gusts.

The questions that matter.

Why choose tilt and turn over a casement window?
Tilt and turn takes larger sashes and cleans from inside. The reinforced bottom hinge carries the weight, so one pane can reach 2,400 mm tall and 160 kg, against 35 to 100 kg for an outward casement. For small openings a casement is often better.
Is tilt and turn right for a small window?
Often not, and we say so at survey. The mechanism needs a deeper frame build-up, and in a small bathroom or box-room opening that eats into the daylight. Where the opening is tight, a slimmer aluminium casement is usually the better answer.
Is a thermally broken aluminium window cold to live with?
No. A 35 mm polyamide thermal break splits the profile, keeping the inner face near room temperature. Uw runs from 1.1 W/m²K double glazed to 0.81 triple glazed. Pair it with a warm-edge spacer, because a plain aluminium one chills the glass edge.
Can I have a dark colour without problems later?
Yes. Aluminium holds its shape in dark colours, where plastic can warp in the sun. The powder coat is applied to Qualicoat standard, over 60 microns thick. A dark matt finish can chalk after years of UV; a yearly wash with mild detergent removes it.
Do inward-opening windows leak in British weather?
No, not with a true installation. The COR 70 Hidden Sash is tested to watertightness Class E1650 and wind resistance Class C5. With an inward sash the locking points, not the wind, hold the sash against its seals, so the hardware matters too.
