French doors and single doors

Aluminium French doors are a pair of hinged leaves, and a single door is one leaf locking straight into its frame. In the narrower openings of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, a pair keeps the elevation symmetric.

01

French doors

A symmetric pair for the rear of the house: both leaves open in seconds and clear the whole width.

02

Single doors

One leaf where a pair will not fit, with the same security options as the rest of the house.

03

Open-in or open-out

Open-in keeps leaves off the terrace; open-out frees the floor inside, and wind presses it onto its gasket.

04Asked before every survey

The questions that matter.

French doors or bifolding doors for the garden?
Bifolds for wide, modern extensions, French doors for narrower garden openings. A pair opens in one quick movement and leaves no stack of folded panels standing in the doorway.
Which way should French doors open?
Open-in if you have clear floor space, open-out on an exposed site. Open-in needs room inside for furniture, radiators and a doormat. On windy sites the wind presses an open-out leaf onto its seals, which helps keep water out. We agree the direction at survey.
Do French doors let draughts in where the two leaves meet?
Not modern aluminium ones. The meeting stiles interlock, and when you lift the handle the locking pulls both leaves onto continuous seals. The draughty reputation comes from old timber doors that had warped.
Will rain get in at the threshold of aluminium French doors?
Not when the threshold is detailed properly. Paving level and a linear drainage channel are part of our installation plan, which also gives level access under Part M. Where site drainage is limited, a projecting cill with a drip groove keeps water off the frame.
