01Glass roofs

What is a glass lean-to roof?

A glass lean-to roof is a single-slope roof fixed to an existing house wall at its high side, covering a side return, rear extension or terrace. The wall junction is the detail that matters most.

01

Single pitch

One slope from house wall to outer edge, so rain runs off one way across a single plane of glass.

02

Fixed to your wall

The high side bears on your existing wall, and the seal and flashing there decide whether the space stays dry.

03

Made to measure

Cut to your opening's width and depth and measured on site, so it fits the wall and supports as built.

03Technical specification

Every option is confirmed at survey, against your opening and your build stage.

The questions that matter.

Do I need planning permission for a glass lean-to roof?
Possibly not. A glazed lean-to on a house generally counts as an extension, so it can fall within permitted development, depending on size and property. Building Regulations apply separately. Flats, conservation areas and listed buildings are stricter, so check with your architect or council.
What is the difference between a lean-to roof and a roof lantern?
A lean-to is an all-glass, single-slope roof fixed to the house wall, suited to a side return or narrow rear space. A lantern is a raised glass box on a kerb within a flat roof, lighting from the top and sides.
Where do glass lean-to roofs usually leak?
At the junction with the house wall, not through the glass. The high side must be flashed into sound brickwork and sealed. Have one team measure, supply and fit it, because a split between suppliers causes trouble at exactly that junction.
Can I use a room under a glass lean-to roof all year?
Yes, with glass specified for it. A room under glass heats and cools faster than one under a solid roof, so the coating must suit the orientation. Tell us which way the roof faces when you enquire, and check the specification on your quote.
