The questions that matter.
What is the difference between a fixed and an openable skylight?
A fixed skylight only lets light in, while an openable one also ventilates. Choose openable for a kitchen, an extension or any room that gets hot in summer with no other opening window, and fixed for a hallway or landing where air already moves.
Do I need planning permission for a flat skylight?
Often not for a house, but it turns on how far the unit projects and on the property. Flats, conservation areas and listed buildings are stricter, and Building Regulations apply on top. Your architect or your council gives the answer for your address.
Will a flat skylight leak?
Not when it is fitted properly. The weak point on a skylight is rarely the glass. It is the junction between the unit, its kerb and the roof covering. We measure on site before manufacture, and the same team supplies and fits the unit.
