Black glazed double doors with side panels and transom closing off a hallway

Fire-rated Crittall-style steel doors

Glazed steel doors with Crittall-style lines for openings where building control asks for a fire door, from loft conversions to HMOs and flats.

01Steel doors

What makes a steel door fire-rated

A fire-rated door is a doorset tested to hold back fire and hot gases for a set time, usually 30 minutes in a home. Ours keep the Crittall-style look, so a protected stair still gets daylight.

01

FD30 doorsets

The British rating: holds back fire for 30 minutes, tested with its frame, glass and hardware. FD30S adds smoke.

02

E30 classification

The European class for 30 minutes of integrity. EI30 adds insulation, so less heat passes through.

03

Loft conversions

The stair becomes an escape route, so doors from habitable rooms onto it usually need FD30.

04

HMOs and flat conversions

Escape-route doors need at least FD30, and every flat entrance onto a shared stair is rated.

04Asked before every survey

The questions that matter.

Do I need a fire door between my kitchen and hallway?
Only in some layouts. A typical two-storey house does not need one. After a loft conversion, doors from habitable rooms onto the stair usually need FD30, and in an HMO the kitchen needs a self-closing fire door.
What is the difference between FD30, E30 and EI30?
All three mean 30 minutes, measured differently. FD30 (British) and E30 (European) both keep flames and hot gases on one side. EI30 also limits heat on the escape side. FD30S means it was tested for smoke too.
Will building control accept your fire certificate?
That is what the certificate is for. We send it with your quote, so your building control officer can check it before you order. It only holds if the door is fitted exactly as tested.
Can one part of a glazed partition be fire rated and the rest not?
Yes, if the non-rated part sits off the fire separation line. On a protected stair, integrity-only (E) glass is allowed only above 1100 mm, so full-height glass needs EI. Send us your drawings and we quote each part.
Do fire-rated glazed doors need self-closers and intumescent seals?
Yes, in almost every case. The closer must shut and latch the door from any position. Intumescent seals swell in a fire to close the gap, so never paint over them.
