What are uPVC French doors?

uPVC French doors are a pair of side-hinged glazed leaves in a steel-reinforced frame that open onto the garden. They suit openings of about 1,500 to 2,000 mm, and come as a single door too.

01

French doors

Two glazed leaves, symmetrical from the garden, for a rear extension or a back wall with uPVC windows to match.

02

Single doors

One leaf for a side return, garage passage or utility room, where security and damp resistance count more than styling.

03

Open-out or open-in

Open-out keeps the room clear but needs pinned security hinges outside; open-in swings into sofas and tables.

The questions that matter.

Should uPVC French doors open in or out?
Usually out in a small room, so the leaves do not sweep across the sofa or dining table. The hinges then sit outside and need security pins so the leaves cannot be lifted off. Open-in keeps the weather side tidy but needs clear floor.
Why has my uPVC door started to drop or rub at the handle?
The leaf has settled on its hinges, common in year one and easy to fix. A 5 mm Allen key on the flag hinges lifts and squares it, and their compression screw seals out a winter draught. Forcing the handle strains the multipoint lock.
Why is water collecting at the threshold of my French doors?
Usually blocked weepholes, the drainage slots that let out water passing the outer seal. If grit or silicone blocks them, the water spills into the room. Keep them clear and never seal over them: the cause is upkeep or fitting, not the door.
Is uPVC the right material for French doors?
For the back of a house, often yes: uPVC matches existing uPVC windows, never corrodes and wipes clean. Aluminium takes slimmer frames and openings wider than about 2,000 mm, so if the view matters more, look at our aluminium French and single doors.
