What is a uPVC casement window?

A uPVC casement window has a side-hinged sash that opens outward on friction stays and locks at several points. It is the most common window in British homes, chosen for durability, insulation and little upkeep.

01

Outward opening

Friction stays hold the sash at any angle without slamming, and storm wind presses it harder onto its seals.

02

Colours and foils

White, Anthracite Grey or woodgrain foil; dark foils hold their colour on a reinforced profile from a good system.

03

Concealed ventilation

The Part F trickle vent can sit above the sash under a frame-colour trim, barely visible from outside.

03Asked before every survey

The questions that matter.

Why does the frame have drainage holes?
By design. In driving rain a little water passes the outer seal, and internal channels drain it back outside, protecting the steel reinforcement. A frame set on brickwork without a proper cill sends that water into the wall, so our team sets the cill detail.
Why do my new windows need trickle vents?
Part F of the Building Regulations sets a minimum background ventilation when windows are replaced. Without it, steam from cooking and showers has nowhere to go and mould follows in a sealed room. On a casement the vent can be concealed above the sash.
Will white uPVC turn yellow over time?
Not on a good modern profile. Yellowing belonged to 1980s and 1990s polymers; today's use titanium dioxide and calcium-zinc stabilisers, and a quality frame lasts 25 to 35 years with only slight dulling. Grease the hardware yearly with silicone or lithium grease, not spray lubricant.
Is a uPVC casement as secure as a timber one?
Security comes from the hardware and the reinforcement, not the plastic. A multipoint lock with mushroom cams and galvanised steel inside the frame do the work. Ask for the lock specification and the profile system by name with your quote.
