01Timber doors

What is a timber front door?

A timber front door is a solid leaf of engineered timber, made to order in a modern or traditional profile. On a period front, it is the material conservation officers accept most readily.

01

Modern or traditional

A clean modern slab or a traditional panelled door, with side panels and glazing bars to match the windows.

02

Glass and locking

Double or triple glazing and a multipoint lock; laminated glass near the lock absorbs an impact instead of shattering.

03

Paint or stain

A factory-applied microporous finish that lets the timber breathe; opaque paint needs a fresh coat every 8 to 10 years.

The questions that matter.

How long does the finish last on a timber front door?
8 to 10 years for opaque paint on a sheltered front, less for a stain or a south-west door, and up to 12 on Accoya. Wash it once or twice a year and touch up chips straight away, because water under the paint damages timber.
Is a timber front door secure enough?
Yes, with the right hardware. PAS24 testing uses a 30 kg bag, a 50 kg impactor and a timed crowbar and chisel attack, and doors pass on a hook multipoint lock, 3-star anti-snap cylinder, hinge-side dog bolts and adjustable 3D hinges. PAS24 tested options available.
Can a timber front door have glass or side panels?
Yes, with glazing bars matching your windows. Glass is the weak point in a break-in, so specify laminated near the lock: toughened glass crumbles and lets a hand reach the handle, while laminated, two panes bonded by PVB to 6.8 mm, soaks up the blow.
Which timber suits a front door?
Match the species to the weather the door faces. Oak, the species conservation officers accept most often, runs 60 to 80 years, meranti and sapele 35 to 50, pine 30 to 40 with disciplined upkeep, and Accoya over 50 on exposed south or west fronts.
