How lift and slide works

A lift and slide door is a sliding door whose sash lifts onto rollers to open and drops onto its seals to close. Its weight seals it, so it suits large, heavy panels on exposed openings.

01

The lifting handle

One turn lifts the sash onto rollers, so panels that often weigh over 200 kg move without a fight.

02

Sealed by weight

Lowered, the sash presses down onto continuous seals, sealing tighter against wind and driven rain than sideways pressure alone.

03

Wide openings

For openings over about 5 metres, where three or four large, heavy sliding panels usually beat a long folding stack.

The questions that matter.

How does a lift and slide door work?
You turn the handle, the sash lifts a few millimetres off its seals onto rollers, and you slide it. Turn the handle back and the sash drops onto the seals, held there by its own weight.
When is lift and slide worth it over a standard sliding door?
When the panels are large and heavy, or the opening faces the weather. The lift lets a heavy sash move easily, and lowered it seals tighter than a plain slider. For a typical garden opening with moderate panels, our classic sliding doors may be enough.
Lift and slide or bifold?
Bifold for the widest possible opening, lift and slide for big panes and fewer frames. A bifold folds back to clear around 90% of the width, whereas a lift and slide leaves at least one panel fixed. We compare both against your opening at survey.
