What are steel-look aluminium windows?

Steel-look aluminium windows copy the slim frames and small panes of the original 1920s and 1930s Crittall windows in thermally broken aluminium. They suit interwar and Art Deco houses, and extensions that must match them.

01

Stepped profile

The aluminium is formed in steps that echo welded joints, so the line from the street stays crisp and slim.

02

Astragal bars

Flat bars bonded to the glass divide each pane, and an optional duplex bar inside the unit adds depth.

03

Coupled runs

Horizontal modules join with couplers and drip bars into long runs and bays, carrying the grid across the elevation.

04Asked before every survey

The questions that matter.

Will steel-look aluminium windows be approved in a conservation area?
Possibly, depending on the building and the council. Victorian and Georgian streets are hardest, as councils usually require timber sashes. Aluminium stands the best chance on interwar and early modernist houses that had metal windows originally, and on rear elevations. Ask your planning department first.
How does steel-look aluminium compare with the original metal frames?
The look matches; the build differs. Original frames were thin metal, usually single glazed. Steel-look aluminium has a thermal break, takes double glazing and does not rust.
Are the glazing bars real or stuck on?
Bonded to the glass, which is how a steel-look grid is made on a double-glazed unit. Flat bars go on the glass faces, with an optional duplex bar inside the unit. You get the depth of small panes without the heat loss of separate frames.
Are slim heritage-style frames as warm as standard aluminium windows?
Slightly less so. A shallow profile has less room for insulation, so the Uw is usually a little higher than on a standard aluminium casement with the same glazing. The quote states the Uw for your configuration.
