04Asked before every survey

The questions that matter.

What keeps an aluminium front door secure?
The multipoint lock. It spreads the handle's turn to 3 to 7 points: hooks resist levering, bolts resist ramming, rollers pull the leaf onto its seals. On a lift-lever lock, lift the handle before turning the key, or one point takes all the load.
Aluminium or composite front door, which is better?
Aluminium for a dark colour, a slim modern leaf or a large door; composite for a traditional panelled look. A dark composite door on a sunny wall can expand, bow and close badly in summer. We fit both; compare them in our Ruislip showroom.
Do I have to cut a letterplate into the door?
No, and many people skip it. A letterplate is a gap for heat and noise, and lets a thief fish for keys or the inside handle. If you want one, choose a security letterplate with an internal deflector, or a wall-mounted box by the gate.
What do Building Regulations say about glass in a front door?
Glass low in the door must be safety glass. Any pane below 1500 mm is a critical location under Approved Document K, so it must be toughened or laminated, not ordinary float. Laminated glass also stops someone breaking a small hole to reach the handle.
